In recently released World Press Freedom Index (WPFI), India was placed
at 136th rank out of 180 nations surveyed worldwide in terms of press
freedom in 2015. In WPFI 2015, India has shown improvement from its rank
of 140 in 2014. However, India’s absolute score has declined from 40.34
to 40.49. The top 10 countries in the index are Finland (1st), Norway
(2nd), Denmark (3rd), Netherlands (4th), Sweden (5th), New Zealand
(6th), Austria (7th), Canada (8th), Jamaica (9th), Estonia (10th).

2. ICICI bank has tied up
with UAE Exchange to offer an instant bank transfer service to the
Indians residing in the Gulf nation. ‘FLASHremit’ service started by the
bank enables customers to conveniently send money instantly to their
beneficiaries in India in Indian Rupees. Customers of ICICI Bank will be
able to avail this service by visiting any of the over 135 branches of
UAE Exchange in UAE including over 15 branches across the Dubai Metro
network.

became the first global company to achieve a market capitalization of
$700 billion. The landmark comes two weeks after Apple created history
by posting a quarterly profit of $18 billion, the biggest ever by a
public company, worldwide.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum was named country’s Sportsman of
the Year for 2014 and thus became the first cricketer to win New
Zealand’s coveted sports award since former captain Martin Crowe in
1991. He was given this award for scoring over 1,000 Test runs in 2014
and for becoming the first New Zealander to score a Test triple century.

Indian-American assistant professor Gurpreet Singh was awarded the
$500,000 National Science Foundation Career award for his breakthrough
research. Gurpreet Singh is an assistant professor of mechanical and
nuclear engineering at Kansas State University. He was given the
National Science Foundation Career award for his research on nanosheets.

The 7th round of India Kenya Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meet was held
in New Delhi. The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields
of bilateral investment, infrastructure, SMEs, agriculture, health,
energy, skill development & entrepreneurship, pharmaceuticals and
tourism and to ensure enhancement of bilateral trade and mutual
cooperation, the two sides also agreed to meet often.

9. The U.S. Senate voted
overwhelmingly to confirm Ashton Carter as President Barack Obama’s next
secretary of defense. Carter, 60, who was approved in a 93-5 vote,
served as deputy defense secretary, the Pentagon’s No. 2 position, from
2011 to 2013. Carter will be Obama’s fourth defense secretary,
succeeding Chuck Hagel, who resigned under pressure last year.

on expanding Automated Demand Side Management (ADSM). The MoU will
reduce power purchase for Reliance Infrastructure and ensure reduction
in carbon footprints for consumers.
